Jose María Velasco: landscape, agriculture and identity

This summer we were asked to do a talk in the new (and very cool!) National Gallery members area. It was based on the exhibition of José María Velasco, a Mexican artist painting in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th. Unfortunately the talk was cancelled last minute due to low interest in the whole exhibition. It was the “first-ever exhibition that the National Gallery has dedicated to an historical Latin American artist, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the UK and Mexico” which is a discussion for a whole other newsletter! Nevertheless we thought we’d share a little from our research into Velasco’s landscapes which spoke to us about food, tradition, changing landscapes, national identities, all of which is related to the topics we want to cover in Sugar Season.
